I am usually depressed on my birthday but I am starting to realize that You Only Live Once! I understand sadness tremendously but on my birthday I am learning to be kind and compassionate to myself. It is hard work and a constant uphill battle to be happy and stress-free but I am trying to put in the work.
I asked a small group of friends to hang out in the town and it wasn't about my birthday really, it was more about me trying to surround myself with my people...my support network. I didn't want presents or a party. I just wanted their company. I thought I deserved that much because I think that some people have guilt around their birthday, at least I do. But we shouldn't...We think we don't deserve a "happy birthday". Take baby steps to enjoy yourself on special days. Just try and fill your "happy birthday" with activities and things that make you HAPPY! I painted my nails hot pink, ate yummy food and just enjoyed the day. I feel good about it. I look forward to next year :0) I am super proud of where I come from. I love being from the Bronx. I love being from NYC. I was curious and did some research to see what famous folks were also born in the Bronx, like me! There are many of us but I picked out just a few to share. The people I picked are folks that I remember from my childhood and was stoked to see their names when I google-d "born in the Bronx." Mary J. Blige I grew up listening to Mary J. Blige. My bestfriend growing up owned all of her cassettes and we would memorize all the songs and dedicated them to boys we had crushes on. Geeks! Mary J. Blige is named the "Queen of Hip Hop Soul" and rightfully so. She is a singer, songwriter and producer, just to name a few of her talents. She has won 9 Grammy's and 4 American Music Awards. Go Mary! Check her out live in this video from the 90's, when I was a teenager. George Romero I love, love, love horror films! Zombie movies are one of my favorites. George Romero is the genius behind the 1968 cult classic "Night of the Living Dead" and he didn't stop there. He has produced "Day of the Dead", "Dawn of the Dead", and "The Crazies", along with other awesome zombie flicks. He is named the "Father of Modern Day Horror Films" and "Godfather of all Zombies". Check out this trailer from "Diary of the Dead". Stacey Dash I heart Stacey Dash. "Clueless!" Do I have to say more? Ok I will...cult classic! I loved her in "Clueless" because she was Donald Faison's girlfriend and I had a crush on him back then...I will stop there about Donald Faison :) She has been in tons of things from my childhood and teenage years including episodes on "The Cosby Show" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". Here is freak out moment she had in the movie "Clueless". Calvin Klein Calvin Klein's clothes were iconic while I was a teenager growing up in the 90's. I begged my mom for CK jeans and fragrances. The commercials were so risque and filled with "cool kids". Marky Mark, Kate Moss and Brook Shields are just a few of the famous faces I remember seeing in his ads. Calvin Klein started off tailoring coats and has build a huge empire that is still growing today. The fashion industry is so competitive and you can fizzle away in a heartbeat so I think it is outstanding that he is still so innovative and takes risks so that he can keep his feet planted securely in the fashion industry. Check out Brook Shields at 14 years old in one of Calvin Klein's commercials that helped to put his name out there even more. Jimmie Walker Do you remember late 70's TV shows? "Good Times" was a spin off "All in the Family" along with "The Jeffersons" and was a super popular show. As a kid I remember seeing Jimmie Walker as "J.J." the son on "Good Times" and he had the catch phrase "Dy-No-Mite!" He was such a television icon and has also starred in "Let's Do It Again" with Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier. He also did guest appearances on other popular shows such as "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island". Check him out, he is hilarious! I hope you enjoyed learning who are also Bronxites!
Are there any famous people who comes from your hometown? |
